Jack Axelrod, the actor who portrayed mob boss Victor Jerome on General Hospital and appeared on shows like Modern Family has died. Variety reports that Axelrod passed away on November 28 in Los Angeles due to natural causes. He was 93 years old.
Axelrod played Victor Jerome on ABC’s “General Hospital” for 40 episodes from 1987 to 1989. He was also recognized for his portrayal of Charlie Yost, a patient in a semi-comatose state at Seattle Grace, on Grey’s Anatomy. Additionally, he made a memorable appearance as the Electrolarynx Guy on My Name Is Earl.
Other more recent television credits include It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Hot in Cleveland, Ray Donovan, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Axelrod’s classic TV appearances include Dallas, Hill Street Blues, Dynasty, Night Court, Knots Landing, Frasier, and Malcolm in the Middle.
Jack Axelrod Served in the Army and Worked as an Architect Before Pursuing Acting
Axelrod was born in Los Angeles on January 25, 1930. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany from February 1953 to February 1955. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for architecture, majoring in the field at UC Berkeley. With dedication and hard work, he achieved licensure as an architect in the state of Washington.
While employed in architectural offices, Axelrod simultaneously pursued an acting career. In 1969, he took on the role of Banquo in an off-Broadway production of “Macbeth.” The following year, he graced the off-Broadway stage once again in “Gandhi,” and subsequently brought the play to Broadway. Unfortunately, the production closed on its opening night.
Axelrod made his debut in the film industry with a memorable role in Woody Allen’s 1971 comedy Bananas. Throughout his career, he contributed to notable films such as 2008’s Hancock, 2010’s Little Fockers, and 2011’s Super 8. He also appeared in the Clint Eastwood directed J. Edgar in 2011 and The Lone Ranger in 2013.
Axelrod also held esteemed positions as a theater faculty member at various prestigious colleges and universities, including the University of Wisconsin, Boston University, University of Michigan, Penn State, Temple University, Cal Arts, and Brandeis University. Additionally, he shared his expertise as a guest instructor at the Aaron Speiser Acting Studio in L.A.
